Name Game

I just read an article about naming things.  You know how you name your car and all of the sudden it has a personality and you become emotionally attached to it; like it’s a person.  In this article, Brigitte Dale, uses the naming of cows as an example.   Apparently, an experiment was done, and  it was found that cows with names produced more milk for their farmers.  You can read the article here.

I know this is true.  I named everyone of my stuffed animals as a child.   So, I’m making the decision to name things that are really important for me to pay more attention to.

Maybe, naming things, is why children, or adults play with their food!

My Car: Every time I clean my car, I trash it with in a week.  The dashboard lights are still out, the oil needs to be changed, and I can’t remember the last time I checked my tire pressure or anything else for that matter.  My car is a 1998 Ford Contour (and no it is not shiny and red like the one in that picture).  It was my mom’s old car, that was passed down to my brother, and now passed down to me.  I really want a Mini Cooper but part of finding happiness is learning to want what you have.  So, I’m naming my car Zelda.  This would be the name I give my dog , but I can’t have one of those either; so car it is.

Me: circa 2007, still going to school....

My School: I’m a perpetual student.  I have this awful feeling that I will be a “twenty-something student” the rest of my life.  Like, I’ll never really be initiated into the adult world if I don’t finish school and get a real job.  I mean, my job as real as it gets, considering I can afford to live on my own and take care of myself.  However, the mundane pattern of “Hi, what can I get for you?”, placing orders on these days, make the Schedule by that day, and the alarm blaring at 4am (yes, 4 am, that was NOT a typo) every morning,  is just really getting to me.  I know I can do something more!  Which, is the point of this blog, and the point of going to school.  So, I’m naming school: Athena.  Athena is the Goddess of Wisdom, so, it seems appropriate.

I’m probably going to name other things, too.  Maybe, I’ll name my computer Jack.  I think being emotionally connected to certain items will in turn make us more emotionally connected to ourselves.  Because these inanimate objects play such a significant role in our everyday lives;  we personally benefit a great deal when taking better care of them.

So, let’s see if it works.
